Ujjain, Madhya Pradesh: A deeply spiritual atmosphere filled the sanctum of the world-famous Shri Mahakaleshwar Temple on Saturday morning as the doors of the garbhagriha opened for the sacred Bhasma Aarti.
As per tradition, priests first performed ritual worship of all deities installed inside the sanctum before offering jalabhishek to Lord Mahakal. This was followed by a ceremonial Panchamrit abhishek, using milk, curd, ghee, sugar and fruit juices.
Special Shringar Adorns the Jyotirlinga
During the Bhasma Aarti, Baba Mahakal was adorned in a striking and divine form.
A silver crown and Tripund were placed on the Jyotirlinga, while a sacred paste of bhang and sandalwood highlighted the Lord’s eyes, brows and facial contours, giving the deity a powerful and serene appearance.
Fragrant garlands of purple, pink and white flowers were offered, transforming the sanctum into a deeply devotional and Shiva-centric space.
Traditional Rituals Performed with Sacred Chants
After the shringar, the first temple bell was rung and water was offered with the chanting of “Hari Om”. Following the camphor aarti, the Jyotirlinga was respectfully covered with cloth, and sacred ash (bhasma) was offered according to age-old customs.
Post the bhasma offering, Lord Mahakal was adorned with silver ornaments, a Rudraksha garland and floral necklaces.
Devotees Witness the Living Form of Mahakal
The deity was offered fruits and sweets as bhog. The aarti concluded amid the rhythmic sounds of jhajh, manjira and damru, creating a powerful spiritual resonance inside the temple.
A large number of devotees attended the Bhasma Aarti and received blessings after witnessing Baba Mahakal’s divine, manifest form.
Ancient Belief Linked to Bhasma Aarti
As per tradition, the Maha Nirvani Akhara offered the sacred bhasma to Lord Mahakal.
Devotees believe that after the bhasma offering, Baba Mahakal appears in a sakar (manifest) form, fulfilling the wishes of his devotees.
