Ujjain, Madhya Pradesh: The sacred Bhasma Aarti was performed in the early hours of Tuesday at the world-famous Shri Mahakaleshwar Temple, drawing a large gathering of devotees seeking the blessings of Lord Mahakal.

As per tradition, temple doors were opened before dawn. In the Sabha Mandap, priests sought divine permission through Swasti Vachan whispered in the ear of Veerbhadra, followed by the ringing of bells. The silver doors of the Sabha Mandap were then opened, allowing rituals to proceed inside the sanctum.

With the opening of the Garbhagriha, priests first removed the earlier adornments and performed Panchamrit Abhishek, followed by Karpur Aarti. Lord Mahakal was bathed with water and then worshipped using a sacred mixture of milk, curd, ghee, sugar, honey, and fruit juices.

Divine Shringar with Bhang, Bhasma and Silver Ornaments

After the abhishek, Lord Mahakal was adorned with a sandalwood tripundra, rudraksha garlands, and a silver crown, reflecting the trinetra (three-eyed) form of the deity.

In the Nandi Hall, Nandi Maharaj was ritually bathed, worshipped, and offered meditation prayers.

During the Bhasma Aarti, the deity was further decorated with silver moon and trident ornaments, bhang, sandalwood paste, dry fruits, and sacred ash. A silver Sheshnag crown, silver skull garland, fragrant flower garlands, and rudraksha malas were also offered, followed by a bhog of fruits and sweets.

Sacred Traditions and Devotee Participation

The aarti concluded amid the rhythmic sounds of jhanzh, manjira, and damru, creating a deeply spiritual atmosphere. The sacred ash was offered to Lord Mahakal on behalf of the Maha Nirvani Akhada, continuing an age-old Shaivite tradition.
