Ujjain, Madhya Pradesh: The world-famous Shri Mahakaleshwar Temple witnessed a divine spectacle on Tuesday as the predawn Bhasma Aarti revealed an exquisitely adorned Raja Swaroop of Baba Mahakal. The moment the garbhgriha doors opened, devotees were greeted with a radiant, fully ornamented form of the Jyotirlinga.
Before the Aarti, the traditional ritual of swasti-vachan was performed by whispering blessings into Veerbhadra Ji’s ear in the Sabha Mandap. After seeking divine permission, priests rang the bell and opened the silver panel leading to the sanctum.
Panchamrit Abhishek Performed Before the Grand Adornment
Inside the sanctum, priests first removed the previous adornment and began the sacred Panchamrit Abhishek, using water, milk, curd, ghee, sugar, honey and fresh fruit extracts.
A karpoor aarti followed, marking the beginning of Mahakal’s special Tuesday decoration.
Silver Crescent, Trishul and Tripund Applied on the Forehead
Today’s adornment featured:
- Silver crescent (ardhachandra)
- Silver trishul
- Tripund with Shivling
- Bhang-chandan coating on the face
- Bright red lips, radiant eyes, and intricate white–saffron markings forming the regal Raja Swaroop
The Jyotirlinga was beautifully decorated with vibrant flowers — especially marigold, rose, jasmine and white floral malas. Silver embellishments, nagara-shaped crowns, ear ornaments and floral offerings were placed on both sides.
Nandi Hall Rituals and Silver Ornaments
In the Nandi Hall, Nandi Ji was bathed, meditated upon and worshipped with flowers. After the abhishek, Baba Mahakal was adorned with:
- Sheshnag’s silver crown
- Silver mundmala
- Rudraksha mala
- Fresh fragrant garlands
The silver throne, silver drapes and shining ornaments illuminated the entire garbhgriha with a divine glow.
Bhog, Music and the Sacred Bhasma Aarti
After the Shringar, Baba Mahakal was offered fruits, sweets and naivedya. The Bhasma Aarti then began with the auspicious sounds of jhanjh, manjeera, damru and bells, creating a deeply spiritual atmosphere inside the temple.
A large number of devotees attended the Aarti and received blessings of the vividly manifested Raja Swaroop. As per tradition, Maha Nirvani Akhada offered the sacred bhasma.
Devotees believe that once the bhasma is offered, Lord Mahakal manifests from the formless to the visible form, granting darshan to His devotees.
