Ujjain, Madhya Pradesh: In the early hours of Saturday, the doors of the world-famous Shri Mahakaleshwar Temple were opened for the sacred Bhasma Aarti. The revered Jyotirlinga of Lord Mahakal was worshipped with full Vedic rituals in Ujjain, drawing devotees from across the region.
Panchamrit Abhishek Performed as per Tradition
The ritual began with a ceremonial abhishek using Panchamrit—milk, curd, ghee, sugar and honey—offered to Lord Mahakal as per age-old traditions. This was followed by the sacred camphor aarti, performed in the sanctum amid a deeply spiritual atmosphere.
Sacred Ash and Silver Ornaments Adorn the Jyotirlinga
After the jalabhishek, Lord Mahakal, depicted in his jata-dhari form, was adorned with an elaborate alankar. Silver crescent-trishul crowns, silver Sheshnag mukut, silver mundmal, rudraksha garlands, fragrant floral malas, sacred ash, sandalwood paste, bhang and dry fruits were offered, enhancing the divine splendour of the Jyotirlinga.
Devotees Gather for Early Morning Darshan
Following the shringar, offerings of fruits and sweets were presented to the deity. The Bhasma Aarti concluded amid the rhythmic sounds of cymbals, manjiras and damru. Nandi Maharaj was also ritually bathed, worshipped and meditated upon during the ceremony.
Temple Complex Resonates with Sacred Chants
A large number of devotees attended the Bhasma Aarti and received Lord Mahakal’s blessings. The sacred ash was offered by the Maha Nirvani Akhara.
According to belief, after the offering of bhasma, Lord Mahakal grants darshan to devotees in a manifested, tangible form, making the early-morning ritual spiritually significant.
