Ujjain, Madhya Pradesh: The world-famous Shri Mahakaleshwar Temple opened its doors around 4 am on Tuesday for the sacred Bhasma Aarti, revealing the divine and awakened form of Lord Mahakal.
As per tradition, auspicious chants were first recited into the ear of Veerbhadra in the Sabha Mandap. After seeking divine permission by ringing the bell, the silver doors of the Sabha Mandap were opened, followed by the opening of the sanctum sanctorum.
Panchamrit Abhishek Performed as per Tradition
Once the sanctum doors were opened, priests removed the earlier adornments and performed Panchamrit pujan. This was followed by the ceremonial Kapoor Aarti. Lord Mahakal was then worshipped with bhang, chandan and Panchamrit, enhancing the Jyotirlinga’s divine presence.
In the Nandi Hall, Nandi Maharaj was bathed, meditated upon and worshipped. Thereafter, Lord Mahakal was given a ritual water abhishek, followed by Panchamrit prepared from milk, curd, ghee, sugar, honey and fruit juices.
Sacred Ash, Silver Ornaments and Floral Adornments Offered
Lord Mahakal was adorned with a silver crescent moon, trishul crown, bhang, chandan, dry fruits and sacred ash. Silver ornaments including the Sheshnag crown, silver mundmala, rudraksha garlands and fragrant flower malas were offered. A bhog of fruits and sweets was also presented.
Devotees Witness the Divine Bhasma Aarti
Amid the rhythmic sounds of cymbals, manjiras and damru, the Bhasma Aarti was performed. A large number of devotees attended the ritual and sought the blessings of Baba Mahakal.
Sacred ash was offered on behalf of the Maha Nirvani Akhada. According to belief, after the offering of bhasma, Lord Mahakal grants devotees darshan in a manifest, divine form.
