Ujjain, Madhya Pradesh: During the early hours of Monday, the sacred Bhasma Aarti was performed at the world-famous Shri Mahakaleshwar Temple, as the temple doors opened at around 4 am. Priests first offered prayers to all deities installed in the sanctum before beginning the main rituals for Lord Mahakal.
Panchamrit Abhishek Performed as per Tradition
As part of the age-old tradition, Lord Mahakal was bathed with holy water, followed by a Panchamrit abhishek using milk, curd, ghee, sugar, and fruit juices. Sacred water was offered amid Vedic chants, filling the sanctum with devotional fervour.
Silver Crescent, Rudraksha and Floral Ornaments Adorn the Jyotirlinga
After the abhishek, the Jyotirlinga was adorned with a silver crescent, a rudraksha crown, and fresh flowers. Harion water was offered during mantra recitation, followed by a camphor aarti.
The deity’s forehead was then decorated with bhang, sandalwood paste, and the Tripundra mark.
Sacred Ash Offered After Shringar Completion
Once the shringar rituals were completed, the Jyotirlinga was covered with cloth and the sacred ash was applied.
Following the bhasma offering, Lord Mahakal was adorned with a silver serpent crown, silver skull garland, rudraksha mala, and fragrant floral garlands of jasmine and roses.
Devotees Gather in Large Numbers for Darshan
Fruits and sweets were offered as bhog during the aarti. A large number of devotees present in the temple witnessed the divine rituals and sought blessings.
The sacred ash for the ritual was offered by the Maha Nirvani Akhada. According to belief, after the bhasma offering, Lord Mahakal grants darshan in a manifest form.
