Ujjain, Madhya Pradesh: The pre-dawn Bhasma Aarti at the Mahakaleshwar Temple on Saturday drew a large gathering of devotees as priests performed sacred rituals and adorned Lord Mahakal with a resplendent silver ensemble.
The temple doors were opened early in the morning following traditional procedures. Priests first removed the previous adornments, performed Panchamrit pujan, and concluded the initial rites with a camphor aarti.
Silver Crescent, Om Symbol and Crown Offered to Lord Mahakal
After the purification rituals, Lord Mahakal was decorated with a silver crescent, Om symbol, rudraksha mala, and a silver crown, creating a radiant divine appearance inside the sanctum.
Sandalwood paste was offered to the Trinetra-dhari (three-eyed) Mahakal. Nandi — the sacred bull — was also bathed, meditated upon, and worshipped.
Panchamrit Abhishek and Sacred Offerings
A traditional abhishek was performed with water followed by Panchamrit—milk, curd, ghee, sugar, honey, and fruit extracts. The Lord was then offered:
- Silver crescent and trishul
- Silver crown and mundmala
- Rudraksha mala
- Bhaang, chandan, dry fruits and sacred ash
- Garlands of fragrant flowers
Fruits and sweets were presented as bhog.
Bhasma Aarti Echoes With Devotion
The Bhasma Aarti concluded amid the resonant sounds of jhanjhs, manjeeras, and damru. Devotees in large numbers attended the ceremony, seeking blessings of Baba Mahakal.
The sacred ash for the aarti was offered by the Mahanirvani Akhada. According to belief, once the sacred ash is offered, Lord Mahakal manifests in a visible, living form before devotees.
