Ujjain | Friday Morning: The world-famous Mahakaleshwar Temple witnessed an extraordinary spiritual moment today as the gates of the sanctum sanctorum opened during the Bhasma Aarti, revealing the divine Manifestation of Mahakal in the form of Lord Mahakal’s serene, awakened, and fully adorned presence.

As per tradition, the priests began the rituals in the Sabha Mandap by reciting Swasti Vachan into the ear of Veerbhadra Ji, followed by the ceremonial ringing of the bell. After seeking divine permission, the silver-plated doors of the sanctum were opened.

Panchamrit Abhishek and Sacred Rituals

On entering the sanctum, the priests gently removed the previous adornments of the Jyotirlinga and performed Mahabhishek with Panchamrit—a sacred blend of water, milk, curd, ghee, sugar, honey, and fruit extracts.

The abhishek was followed by Camphor Aarti, Vedic chants, and the beginning of today’s special decoration.

Silver Adornment and Lotus-Floral Beautification

For today’s Bhasma Aarti, Lord Mahakal was adorned with:

  • A silver covering (rajat-aavaran)
  • An artistically crafted crown
  • Delicate arrangements of lotus flowers and fragrant garlands

Sacred symbols such as Urdhva-Pundra, Tripundra, Om, and the Agya Bindu were carved over the bhang–chandan paste, giving the deity an intense yet meditative expression.

The slight greenish facial tint, soft red lip detailing, and sharply defined eyes became the highlight of today’s divine depiction.

The surrounding mandala was decorated with pink, yellow, white, and red flowers, creating a vivid and devotional ambience.

A Sanctum Immersed in Fragrance and Sound

On both sides of the Jyotirlinga, ornamental drapes, silver engravings, perfumed lotus décor, and sacred textiles enhanced the atmosphere, making the entire sanctum vibrate with a profound Shivamay presence.

After the Bhasma offering, various fruits, sweets, and naivedya were placed before the Lord. Throughout the ritual, the sanctum echoed with the auspicious sounds of jhanjh, manjira, shankh, damru, and temple bells.

Devotees Witness the Kingly Manifestation of Mahakal

A large number of devotees attended today’s Bhasma Aarti, receiving blessings of Lord Mahakal in his majestic, manifest form.

According to temple belief, after the Bhasma offering, Mahakal transitions from the formless to the manifest, granting devotees the rare opportunity of darshan.
