Ujjain, Madhya Pradesh: The world-famous Mahakaleshwar Temple witnessed a deeply spiritual atmosphere early Friday morning as the doors of the sanctum opened for the revered Bhasma Aarti.
The ritual began with priests performing Swasti Vachan in the Sabha Mandap, followed by ringing the ceremonial bell to seek divine permission before opening the silver doors of the inner hall.
Traditional Abhishekam Performed at Dawn
Nandi’s ritual snan, dhyan and pujan were conducted before the main ceremony. Lord Mahakal was first bathed with water, and then worshipped with Panchamrit, a sacred blend of milk, curd, ghee, sugar, honey and fruit extracts.
The deity was adorned with silver crescent, trident, royal crown and traditional ornaments, enhancing the divine aura inside the sanctum.
Bhang, Sandalwood and Bhasma Offered to Lord Mahakal
Priests offered bhang, sandalwood paste, dry fruits and sacred ash, marking the day’s special adornment. Lord Mahakal was decorated with a silver Sheshnag crown, a silver mundmaal, and a Rudraksha garland along with fragrant flower malas.
Fresh fruits and sweets were presented as bhog.
Huge Devotee Turnout for the Sacred Ritual
A large number of devotees thronged the temple to witness the spiritually charged Bhasma Aarti. The Mahanirvani Akhada performed the offering of sacred ash to Lord Mahakal.
According to the long-held belief, once the bhasma is offered, Lord Mahakal is said to appear in a manifest, living form, blessing all those present.
