Ujjain, Madhya Pradesh: During the early hours of Friday, the world-famous Shri Mahakaleshwar Temple witnessed the sacred Bhasma Aarti, as Lord Mahakal appeared in a fully awakened and radiant form before devotees.
The daily pre-dawn ritual remains one of the most revered traditions of Ujjain, drawing pilgrims from across India and abroad.
Panchamrit Abhishek Performed as per Tradition
As per age-old customs, the Jyotirlinga was first bathed with holy water. This was followed by Panchamrit abhishek using milk, curd, ghee, sugar and fruit juice. Priests completed the ritual strictly according to Vedic procedures, maintaining the sanctity of the ceremony.
Sacred Ash, Tripundra and Crescent Mark Adorn the Jyotirlinga
After the abhishek, pure bhasma was offered to the Jyotirlinga. A Tripundra was inscribed on the forehead, accompanied by a crescent symbol and silver embellishments at the center. Sandalwood, saffron and aromatic herbs further enhanced the divine glow of Lord Mahakal.
Grand Floral Crown Gives Mahakal a Majestic Appearance
A large floral crown made of white, yellow and red flowers was placed atop the Jyotirlinga. Jasmine, roses, marigolds and orchids filled the sanctum with fragrance, giving Lord Mahakal a regal and majestic appearance during the aarti.
Devotees Drawn to Mahakal’s Divine Gaze
The divine eyes of Lord Mahakal remained the focal point of devotion. Believers hold that the deity appears in a fully awakened form during the Bhasma Aarti and grants relief from pain, illness and negativity to those who seek blessings.
Temple Complex Resonates with Sacred Chants
Following the aarti, Lord Ganesha, Nandi Maharaj and other deities were worshipped. The temple complex resonated with chants of “Har Har Mahadev” and “Jai Shri Mahakal,” creating a deeply spiritual atmosphere in Ujjain.
