Ujjain, Madhya Pradesh: A deeply spiritual atmosphere unfolded at the world-famous Shri Mahakaleshwar Temple on Tuesday morning as the doors of the sanctum opened for the sacred Bhasma Aarti. Devotees were greeted by the calm, awakened and radiant form of Baba Mahakal, adorned in a unique and divine shringar.

As per tradition, Lord Mahakal was first bathed with holy water and then anointed with Panchamrit — milk, curd, ghee, sugar and fruit juice. This was followed by the sacred offering of bhasma (holy ash), marking the completion of the ancient ritual.

Lotus Design and Floral Crown Mark Today’s Shringar

On this occasion, the Jyotirlinga was decorated with a special ash coating and an elaborate floral arrangement. A large flower crown made of white and yellow blossoms, with roses and marigolds standing out prominently, adorned the head of the Jyotirlinga.

At the front, a lotus motif sculpted into the Shivling form became the defining highlight of the day’s decoration, drawing the attention of devotees during the early morning darshan.

Expressive Eyes and Radiant Facial Detailing

Special care was taken to shape the eyes, brows and facial contours of Baba Mahakal. Using sandalwood paste and fragrant argaja, priests created a lifelike and serene expression, reflecting both calmness and divine energy.

The central portion of the Jyotirlinga featured a balanced combination of Shivling markings, Tripundra and ash lines, enhancing the symbolic beauty of the sacred form.

Silver Ornaments and a Devotional Atmosphere

The Jyotirlinga was surrounded by long garlands of pink, white and violet flowers. Silver adornments, including a Sheshnag figure on a silver base, completed the royal and majestic appearance of Baba Mahakal.

As lamps were lit and incense filled the sanctum, chants of “Har Har Mahadev” echoed through the temple, immersing devotees in a deeply devotional experience.

Faith and Belief of Devotees

After the aarti, fruits, sweets and traditional offerings were presented to the deity, along with prayers to other deities in the temple complex.

A large number of devotees attended the Bhasma Aarti and received darshan of Baba Mahakal’s awakened form.
