Ujjain, Madhya Pradesh: The sacred Bhasma Aarti was performed in the early hours of Saturday at the world-famous Shri Mahakaleshwar Temple, following age-old rituals and traditions.
As per custom, the temple doors were opened methodically before dawn. The ritual began in the Sabha Mandap, where Swasti Vachan was chanted into the ear of Veerbhadra, followed by the ceremonial ringing of the bell. After seeking divine permission, the silver doors of the Sabha Mandap and later the sanctum sanctorum were opened.
Panchamrit Abhishek Performed as per Tradition
Inside the sanctum, priests first removed the previous adornments of Lord Mahakal and performed Panchamrit pujan. The Jyotirlinga was bathed with holy water, followed by milk, curd, ghee, sugar, honey and fruit juices. Aarti with camphor was then performed in accordance with Vedic rites.
Sacred Ash and Silver Ornaments Adorn the Jyotirlinga
Lord Mahakal was specially adorned with a silver crescent crown, rudraksha garlands and sandalwood paste. The Trinetra-bearing deity was further decorated with silver trident crown, bhang, dry fruits and sacred ash.
A silver Sheshnag crown, silver mundmala, fragrant floral garlands and rudraksha malas completed the elaborate shringar. Fruits and sweets were offered as bhog.
Temple Complex Resonates with Sacred Chants
The Bhasma Aarti was performed amid the rhythmic sounds of cymbals, manjiras and damru. A large number of devotees were present during the ritual and received the blessings of Baba Mahakal.
Sacred ash was offered on behalf of the Mahanirvani Akhara. Devotional belief holds that after the offering of bhasma, Lord Mahakal grants devotees darshan in a manifest, divine form.
