Ujjain, Madhya Pradesh: The world-famous Shri Mahakaleshwar Temple witnessed the sacred Bhasma Aarti early Thursday as the sanctum doors were opened before dawn.

Devotees were greeted with the divine and awakened form of Lord Mahakal during the traditional rituals.

Panchamrit Abhishek Performed as per Tradition

The rituals began with a holy water abhishek of Lord Mahakal. This was followed by Panchamrit puja using milk, curd, ghee, honey and sugar. The ceremony concluded with a camphor aarti, performed according to age-old temple customs.

In the Nandi Hall, Nandi Maharaj was ceremonially bathed, meditated upon and worshipped with full rituals before the main aarti.

Sacred Ash, Tripundra and Trinetra Adorn the Jyotirlinga

Lord Mahakal was adorned with Tripundra, the Trinetra and the Trishul, symbolising divine power and protection. Silver ornaments including a crescent moon, trident, crown and jewellery were offered. Bhang, sandalwood paste, dry fruits and sacred ash were applied as part of the elaborate shringar, enhancing the grandeur of the Jyotirlinga.

Silver Crown, Floral Garlands and Bhog Offered

During the adornment, Lord Mahakal wore a silver crown of Sheshnag, a silver skull garland, rudraksha malas and fragrant flower garlands. Fruits and sweets were later offered as bhog to the deity.

Devotees Drawn to Mahakal’s Divine Gaze

A large number of devotees attended the Bhasma Aarti and received the divine blessings of Baba Mahakal. The Mahā Nirvani Akhara offered sacred ash during the ritual.
