Ujjain, Madhya Pradesh: The doors of the world-famous Shri Mahakaleshwar Temple were opened early Wednesday morning for the sacred Bhasma Aarti, revealing the divine form of Lord Mahakal in the sanctum.
Following tradition, priests first paid obeisance to Veerbhadra and sought ritual permission before opening the silver doors. The adornments from the previous day were removed, after which Panchamrit puja was performed, concluding with camphor aarti.
Panchamrit Abhishek Performed as per Tradition
Lord Mahakal was bathed with holy water and then worshipped with Panchamrit prepared from milk, curd, ghee, sugar, honey and fruit juices. The ritual was carried out with full Vedic procedures inside the sanctum.
In the Nandi Hall, Nandi Maharaj was also bathed, meditated upon and worshipped as part of the traditional sequence before the main aarti.
Sacred Ash, Silver Ornaments and Rudraksha Adorn the Jyotirlinga
After the abhishek, offerings of dry fruits, fruits and sweets were made. Sacred ash was then applied to the Jyotirlinga. Lord Mahakal was adorned with a silver Tripundra, silver crown, silver Mundmala and rudraksha garlands, along with fragrant floral garlands.
The Mahakal form also featured the silver Sheshnag crown, enhancing the divine and radiant appearance during the early morning ritual.
Devotees Drawn to Mahakal’s Divine Gaze
A large number of devotees attended the Bhasma Aarti and received blessings from Lord Mahakal. Sacred ash was offered by the Mahanirvani Akhara.
As per belief, after the offering of bhasma, Lord Mahakal grants devotees darshan in a manifest form from the formless.
