Ujjain, Madhya Pradesh: The world-famous Shri Mahakaleshwar Temple witnessed a grand Bhasma Aarti early Saturday morning as the temple doors opened at 4 am.
Soon after the opening of the sanctum, priests performed traditional worship of all deities installed in the garbhagriha. Lord Mahakal was first offered a ritual water abhishek, followed by Panchamrit puja using milk, curd, ghee, sugar and fruit juices.
With the sound of the first ceremonial bell, priests chanted “Hari Om” while offering sacred water. The Jyotirlinga was then adorned with silver crescent on the forehead, bhang, sandalwood paste and a garland of fresh roses.
The priests applied the Trinetra and Tripundra, dressing Lord Mahakal in a majestic royal form. After the camphor aarti, the Jatadhari Mahakal was offered a silver crown and Tripundra as part of the shringar.
Following the completion of the adornment, the Jyotirlinga was covered with cloth and sacred ash was applied. Mahakal was further decorated with bhang, dry fruits, ornaments and flowers, enhancing the royal appearance.
After the bhasma offering, a silver crown of Sheshnag, silver mundmala, rudraksha garlands and fragrant floral malas were offered to the deity. Lord Mahakal was then presented with fruits and sweets as bhog, along with rose-scented flowers.
A large number of devotees attended the Bhasma Aarti and sought blessings. The sacred ash was offered by the Maha Nirvani Akhara.
Devotees believe that after the bhasma offering, Lord Mahakal grants darshan in a tangible form to his followers.
