Ujjain, Madhya Pradesh: At the world-famous Shri Mahakaleshwar Temple, devotees witnessed a deeply spiritual morning during the Bhasma Aarti held in the early hours of January 12, 2026.

As the sanctum doors opened during Brahma Muhurat, chants of “Om Namah Shivaya” and “Jai Shri Mahakal” echoed across the temple complex, creating a powerful devotional atmosphere.

Panchamrit Abhishek Performed as per Tradition

Following tradition, Lord Mahakal was first bathed with holy water. A Panchamrit abhishek using milk, curd, ghee, sugar, honey and fruit juices was then performed with full Vedic rituals.

After the abhishek, sacred ash was offered to the Jyotirlinga, followed by a ceremonial camphor aarti, marking the completion of the revered Bhasma Aarti.

Sacred Ash, Silver Crown and Floral Garlands Adorn the Jyotirlinga

During the Bhasma Aarti shringar, Lord Mahakal was adorned with a silver crown, Sheshnag ornamentation, rudraksha garlands and a Tripundra made of bhang and sandalwood.

Fragrant garlands of white, pink and violet flowers enhanced the divine appearance. Special sandalwood and aromatic paste were used to decorate the eyes, brow and facial features of the Jyotirlinga. Silver ornaments and the trident symbol remained the focal point of the day’s adornment.

Dadhyodak Aarti Reveals a Serene Morning Form

Later in the morning, the Dadhyodak Aarti was performed, during which Lord Mahakal was bathed in sacred curd. The white flow of dadhyodak highlighted the Tripundra on the Jyotirlinga, symbolising purity and renunciation.

White floral garlands with red flowers at the centre further enhanced the calm and composed morning form. Devotees believe this aarti grants physical and mental purification.

Bhog Aarti Highlights Annapurna Form

During the midday Bhog Aarti, a variety of fruits, sweets, grains and traditional offerings were presented to Lord Mahakal. The Jyotirlinga was decorated with red, saffron and yellow flowers, reflecting abundance and grace.

According to belief, witnessing the Bhog Aarti ensures prosperity, food security and harmony in family life.

Evening Aarti Brings Peaceful Closure to the Day

In the evening, Lord Mahakal appeared in a tranquil and compassionate form during the Sandhya Aarti. The Jyotirlinga was adorned with sacred ash, sandalwood paste, a crescent moon symbol and silver ornaments.

Soft floral fragrances and rhythmic chants filled the sanctum as devotees offered prayers, believing the evening aarti brings mental peace, positive energy and relief from hardships.

The temple complex remained immersed in chants of “Har Har Mahadev” throughout the day.
